Getting Started with RAP at Home

The King-Devick Test has been validated for a standardized test size therefore calibration of the display is required before use. You can choose to calibrate your screen with either a ruler or a letter sized (8.5" x 11") sheet of paper. This process is automatically prompted at sign-in on devices that have not been calibrated previously. There are two separate methods by which you can calibrate for the test.

    Calibrating with a Ruler:

  1. When calibrating the test with a ruler hold the ruler up against the image of the ruler on the screen and adjust it to line up the 0 and 5 inch marks on the ruler against the marked 0 and 5 inch positions on the screen.
  2. Calibrating app with a ruler

Calibrating with a Piece of Paper

  3. When calibrating by paper, hold a piece of 8.5"x11" piece of paper against the screen and line the digital paper up against the phyiscal paper.

King-Devick Test Setup:

Before a Subject can begin practicing they will have to establish a starting speed by taking a King-Devick Test (K-D Test).

Administrator: Sit next to the Subject (side-by-side) for test administration. Mouse and keyboard control is for Administrators only during testing. Have a scoresheet and pen/pencil ready.

Tip:Try laminating the scoresheets and reuse them for testing.
Subject: The Subject should sit with good posture, at an arm’s length from the screen, with eyes level at the top of the screen. During testing, the Subject should hold the head still and move the eyes only, without using a finger to follow along, while calling out the numbers.

Scoring: The King-Devick Test is scored on age, speed and accuracy. Timing will automatically begin after the administrator clicks Next on the Demonstration Card. The Subject should immediately begin reading numbers aloud on the test cards. After the Subject calls out the last number on each test card, click Next to pause timing and proceed to a break card. Repeat the procedure for Test Cards II and III. The administrator will record errors for each Test Card on the scoresheet. An error is recorded for each omission, addition, substitution, and transposition. If a Subject skips a line, 5 errors (omissions) should be recorded.

Tip: If a Subject makes an error and quickly corrects it, no error is recorded.
  1. Select the Subject listed as Awaiting King-Devick Test in from the left column. In the Subject's page, click the blue button labeled King-Devick Test.

  6. You will be directed to the King-Devick Demonstration Card. Use this card as practice and explain to the Subject how to read aloud the numbers from left to right as quickly as they can while trying not to make errors. When the Subject understands the task at hand, click Next and proceed to Test Card I. The Test has begun, and the Subject should immediately begin calling out numbers.
  7. KD Test Demo Card

  8. Once the Subject calls out the last digit on Test Card I, quickly click Next to proceed to a break card. Timing is paused on all break cards.
  9. Tip:If Test Card II was very difficult for the Subject or excessive errors were made, the K-D Test can be stopped after Test Card II.

  10. After the Subject completes Test Card III, the administrator tallies any errors and enters the total errors on the Results page. Enter tester's initials and any optional comments. Click Confirm and results will be automatically compared to age-matched normative data. The Subject is ready to begin practicing.

Practicing in RAP

What to do While Practicing

  • Posture: The Subject sits with good posture, approximately arm’s length from the screen, with the eyes level at the top of the screen.
  • Head Position: During practice, the Subject should hold the head still and move the eyes only.
  • Rapid Number Naming: Once practice begins, the Subject says each number out loud, left-to-right, top-to-bottom as quickly and accurately as possible.
  • Adjusting Practice Speed: The goal is to achieve the fastest speed (numbers per minute) with no errors. It may take a few trials to find the ideal practice speed. If the Subject is having difficulty keeping up or has excessive errors, adjust to a slower speed. If the Subject is able to see and say all numbers presented without difficulty, increase the speed by 5 numbers per minute. 100% accuracy should be achieved for three practice rounds, or nine Practice Cards, before increasing the speed.
  1. Once a Subject has completed their King-Devick Test, they are now ready to begin practicing. The speedometer is automatically adjusted to the recommended starting speed based on K-D Test performance. To manually adjust your Subject's practice speed, click faster or slower on the speedometer, or click and drag the speedometer needle. Once the desired speed is selected, click the Practice button.

    A note regarding Image Selection:
The Recovery Acceleration Program includes a feature called Image Selection that allows subjects to select various target images rather than numbers to call out. The alternative options are colors, shapes, or farm animals. This feature cannot be used in conjunction with Practice Accuracy Checking, as that is only able to be used with number naming. The Subject's speed may vary depending on the target images they decide to use.

Practice Accuracy Check

The Practice Accuracy Check is an optional feature that uses your device microphone and speech technology to provide automatic accuracy estimates during your Subject’s K-D RAP Practice.

The K-D RAP Administrator checks the Practice Accuracy Check box in the Subject’s profile to enable it.

Practice Accuracy Check can be toggled ON or OFF depending for a given practice under the speedometer.
